The purpose of this issue is to highlight the advancements in technology of processing, production and manufacturing in the modern industrial world. The subject of mechanics plays an important role in development of such technologies. With technology driving our processes and methods in industries, it is important to highlight the issues associated with such technologies. We aim to show these technologies, how they are being used and what drives them.

All articles published in this special issue should answer any, some or all the following questions:
i. What are the technological advancements in the processing, production and manufacturing?
ii. How is/are these technologies executed?
iii. What is the contribution of these technologies to the industries?

While answering these questions, the authors will provide insights on past, present and future of the subject. The issue is open for all calibers of thoughts, philosophical, scientific or empirical perspectives of this subject.

In this issue we present recent development of effective analytical and numerical techniques for control problems for smart structures as plates, shells etc. A smart structure is denoted every structural system, incorporating sensors and actuators, as well as a suitably defined control system in order to suppress various excitations/vibrations, caused by external forces. Smart structures also present the capability of self-monitoring, which is very important for control of oscillations, caused by several natural disasters such as earthquakes, strong winds, etc. or in the presence of failures, such as delamination.

We encourage scientists and engineers to submit their original innovative and valuable works, devoted to the control dynamic problems. The topics concern but not limited to analytical, numerical and experimental techniques, for solving different control problems. Along with traditional classical control we welcome methods based on fuzzy inference systems, including neuro-fuzzy, piezoelectric shunt control and optimization algorithms.

In the present special issue, we have focused on advances in two study fields of powertrain systems, including solid mechanics and controlling. We encourage researchers to submit their original articles, in which new, innovative and evaluable works have been performed, by both numerical and experimental techniques. Specifically, we are interested in researches that could be proposed in the simulation in solid mechanics of components, the validation and testing of engines and components, the components design, the failure analysis and the material investigation, the fault diagnosis, the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), the control and dynamics, etc.

The aim of the special issue is to provide a forum for publication of original peer-reviewed regular research articles, reviews and letters on new research results on fluid and structural dynamics. It is expected that the special issue will show the recent advances and the future research directions of fluid and structural dynamics and provide the reader with valuable information.

Its aim is to bring together leading researchers who are interested in experimental and also theoretical work in the field of mechanic applications to initiate more careful consideration of these issues. It should contribute to creating the closer contacts and sharing experience in application of various experimental methods, preparation and implementation of experiments, processing of results and numerical simulations of experiments. This issue is dedicated to the important topic of how to use CFD and CSD and link it to many other applications.

Tribology is defined as “the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion” and embraces the study of friction, wear and lubrication. The subject matter and the associated scope of this special issue oriented to scientists from academia and industry are to discuss hot topics and recent advances in varied application include manufacturing (forming, assembling, finishing, surface engineering of metallic materials, lubrication, tool coatings), development of new materials and nanomaterials (in different forms, for further enhancing tribological performance and for finding novel applications), specific tribometer for testing coupling phenomena (brake system, forging die, …) and other.

It is devoted to the publication of novel results as well as to review presentations of methods, tests, analyses in the investigation of tribological problems. Special Issue on Progress in tribology accepts papers representing original research works and reviews, case studies, short communications and letters to the editor.
