Bioactive glasses, ceramics and composite materials
Submission deadline: 02/25/2013
Scope and purposes
As a class of biomaterials, ceramics, glasses and glass-ceramics are generally used to repair or replace skeletal hard connective tissues. These materials have known as bioactive ceramics. The surface forms a biologically active carbonate containing hydroxyapatite (CO3HA) layer that provides the bonding interface with tissue. On the other hand, natural or synthetic polymers are especially interesting as biomaterials, because they can be reality combined physically or chemically with macromolecules or cells to yield biologically functional systems. On the base on these points of views, the organic/inorganic composites are a promising way for producing of bioactive materials.
The synthesis, properties, applications, advantages and disadvantages of these composites will be discussed in this Special Issue.
Topics of primary interest include, but are not limited to:
• Synthesis of glasses, ceramics and glass-ceramics in CaO-SiO2, CaO-P2O5-SiO2 and/or other systems via different routs. • Characterization of the synthesized structures. • In vitro and/or in vivo bioactivity of the prepared glasses, ceramics and glass-ceramics. • Synthesis of organic/inorganic composites in the presence of natural or synthetic polymers. • Characterization of the prepared composites – examination of bond between two parts of the composites. • In vitro or in vivo bioactivity of the synthesized composites.
