Interdisciplinary Approach to the Studies of Onomastics
Submission deadline: 11/30/2017
Scope and purposes
Onomastics is a discipline that deals with the study of names of people and places. Though, various scholars estimate that Onomastics began between 5-6 thousand years ago in the ancient Egypt and later traced back as a linguistic discipline in the ancient Greece, it has been given very little attention by the linguistic intelligentsia especially its interdisciplinary nature. For instance, limited direct studies dealing with its two major domains have been carried out specifically on anthroponomastics (study of human names) and toponomastics (study of place names). There are also numerous studies on types of anthroponomastics with regards to various languages and communities. However, these studies have tended to be purely dealing with the semantic aspects of names. Despite the fact that names have semantic meanings, their structures tend to have prefixes and suffixes that may denote gender of the bearer of the name, and also some free morphs may be included in a name to indicate son of or daughter of someone among other denotations. For instance, son of John may be named as Johnson and son of Ivan in Russia may be referred to as Ivanovich. This tendency clearly shows an interdisciplinary nature of Onomastics and is exhibited amongst various world languages in Africa, Asia and Europe among others. Thus, there is need to study existing interplay between its branches especially anthroponomastics and those of pure linguistics like morphology, and also other social science disciplines. Thus, the special issue of this journal welcomes well researched articles from various scholars to unearth its interdisciplinary nature with respect to various languages in the world.
