Mehedi Hashan, Santanu Das, Mithon Majumder, Ashique UL Haque, Md. Kawsar Hossain, Deng Zhongmin

Sewing process is one of the most important stages in labor intensive ready-made clothing enterprises. Quality faults occurring during this process adversely affect the product quality and product efficiency, and also increase the production cost. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the knitwear production process is under control in a knitwear production enterprise and to detect the processes with highest rates of sewing faults in sewing department and finally to make suggestions for improving the quality control. Among the Statistical Process Control methods; control list, product control chart were used in the study. “Product control chart” was used to test whether the production process is controlled in the enterprise. Furthermore, the statistical methods were employed to determine the issues that need to be done in the improvement efforts and to detect the relations between the process groups supposedly effective on faults occurring in knitwear production and the amount of faults. Also, the processes with highest amounts of sewing faults and the effects of these processes on fault rates were investigated. As a result, it was concluded that the production process was statistically not under control in the ready-made clothing enterprise. In addition, this study demonstrated that the investigation of each process group by drawing their product control charts would make significant contributions to foresee the results and prepare more effective the improvement plans.

The Roles of Geotextile in Erosion & Sediment Control

Publication year: 2013
Source: International Journal of Clothing Science, Volume 2, Number 1
Engr. Nasrin Ferdous, Engr. Reashad Bin Kabir

Geotextiles particularly refers to permeable fabric or synthetic material, woven or non-woven, which can be used with geotechnical engineering material. They apply to a broad range of civil engineering construction, paving, drainage and other applications. Geotextiles are extensively used with soil, rock, earth or any other geotechnical engineering-related material. In any one application, a Geotextile may be performing several of these functions. In Erosion control, the Geotextile protects soil surfaces from the Tractiveforces of moving water or wind and rainfall Erosion. On the other hand a Geotextile serves to control Sediment when it stops particles suspended in surface fluid flow while allowing the fluid to pass through. After some period of time, particles accumulate against the Geotextile, reducing the flow of fluid and increasing the pressure against the Geotextile. On the whole this paper discusses the roles of Geotextile in Erosion and Sediment control.

Antibacterial Activity and UV Protection Property of Some Egyptian Cotton Fabrics Treated with Aqueous Extract from Banana Peel

Publication year: 2012
Source: International Journal of Clothing Science, Volume 1, Number 1
Saleh Mansour Salah

The alkaline fractions of banana peel (Musa, cv. Cavendish) of fruits have been used as a natural dye for cotton fabrics. In the current study, banana peel was evaluated as a multi-functional antibacterial and UV protective agent on the cotton substrate. The extracted solution using 0.1% NaOH was analyzed by high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) analysis technique. The extracted dye was applied to the premordated bleached and mercerized Egyptian cotton fabrics made from Giza 89 and Giza 80 cotton varieties. Ferric sulphate was used as mordent. Antibacterial activity was analyzed qualitatively in terms of zone of inhibition and quantitatively in terms of percentage reduction in bacteria. Dyeing performance in terms of color parameters K/S, L*, a*, b* and ΔE were studied. Effectiveness of banana peels against ultraviolet radiation was evaluated in terms of ultraviolet protection factor value (UPF). The data obtained showed that the mercerized fabrics have excellent antibacterial activity, high dye uptake with high UV protection properties among the control and the unmercerized cotton fabrics. The data obtained revealed that Giza 89 had the higher antibacterial activity, dye uptake with high UV protection properties than Giza 80. These results are very important for industrial application with the production of a natural dye, antibacterial, and UV protected as an inexpensive source from waste banana peel as a by product. The optimum treatment and dyeing conditions were applied on 620 g fabric (about 5 m) and matched results were obtained to the research samples.
