International Journal of Advanced and Multidisciplinary Social Science
Pedagogy and Learning in African Schools

Submission deadline: 01/15/2018

Scope and purposes

Any learning that will not end up in a classroom but serves the purpose of meeting the needs of a society must start from a good and right classroom instruction. The pedagogy has been defined as the strategies of instruction, the profession of teaching and the activities of instructing. Given this, research studies indicate that teacher poor pedagogy in African schools is the bane of the continent drawback in education. For instance, science learning in Africa is in a terrible state due to poor strategies of instruction among many other factors. This is evidenced by the cohort of students graduating from schools in Africa. These students lacked skills, scientific literacy and unable to confront the real-life problems with the knowledge acquired. The teacher instructs the students based on the curriculum not on what the students’ needs. The teacher sought information and transferred same directly to the students to memorize. The learning is superficial, not authentic and the student retention is low. Most instructions trivialized the relationship between initial student’s experience and the expected new knowledge. It is equally amazing that teachers are yet to understand that students in a class are multiple intelligences and his or her instruction should take note of this understanding.

The preceding is a concern that requires urgent attention if countries in Africa will develop educationally to meet up with the industrialized nations of the world. Our education must metamorphous from the learning by reading of textbook and curriculum-laden to the authentic one. Therefore, this special issue seeks for both empirical and theoretical papers focusing on the students learning that will enhance Creativity, Scientific skills, Critical thinking, and Scientific literacy.
