Adsorption technique for wastewater treatment

Scope and purposes

Industrial, agricultural and domestic activities have increased the concentration of toxic organic and inorganic contamination in water and wastewater. The presence of high levels of these contaminants in the environment cause health risks to humans and ecosystems. Several technologies were applied for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater include chemical precipitation, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, electrochemical treatment, photo catalyst and adsorption. Adsorption process has been considered as cost effective method for the removal of pollutants from wastewater treatment. This special issue will be focused on the researches studying the adsorption of organic and organic pollutants from wastewater, kinetics and models of the adsorption process.

Consumption and use of mineral waters: environmental and health issues

Scope and purposes

The Special Issue focuses on the environmental impacts and individual and super-individual health effects of mineral water consumption, as well as, the recreational or medical (balneotherapeutic) use of spa waters. The main aim is to summarize the up-to-date knowledge on direct and indirect potential hazards of these activities collected by using biological, chemical and medical methods.


Topics of primary interest include, but are not limited to:
• Toxicity of compounds in PET-bottled waters
• Effects of thermal spa waters
• Organic analysis of natural thermal waters
• Ecological effects of thermal water effluents

Recent Milestones in Water and Wastewater Engineering

Scope and purposes

As the pressure of environmental impact is rising in the current world, many research and development works are being taken up. Prime motto to bring out this journal is to throw light on recycle and reuse of domestic and industrial wastewater. Approximately the wastewater generated is equal to 80% of total water supply. Henceforth, it’s very essential to promote the scope for innovative works to treat water and waste water. Maintenance of self-purification in streams and rivers is the question to be looked upon and is a matter of close concern. Untreated wastewater is the major source of river pollution. It is very essential to treat the wastewater right from minor scale to major scales. Many colleges and universities are offering special studies on these topics. Different methodologies are involved to reduce the severity of physical, chemical and biological parameters of the sewage. Rising demand for water in the metropolitan cities imposing a closer sight to reuse the wastewater. Steps involved to treat the sewage have been monitoring continuously and are in the path of rapid developments.

To attain a sustainable growth in the field of environmental engineering, having a better sanitation system is not just enough. The society or the community should also have a better facility to treat the waste generated. All the industries (small scale, medium and large scale) and wastewater generated from city municipal corporation should treat the wastewater well before the discharged into nearest water bodies. Journal recommends to install treatment plants in every educational institutes, colleges, universities and in industries

The aim of this special issue is to boost up advanced research works in the area of water and wastewater treatment plants, including the reduction of physical, chemical and biological hazards and to reuse the wastewater generated from domestic and industrial fields. The special issue of Journal becomes a source of reference for higher technical educational institutes, colleges and upcoming innovative researcher. Cholinesterase enzymes as effective tools for environmental pollution monitoring: novel findings regarding their application and characterization.

Scope and purposes

We currently live in an information society. As information and communication technologies develop at an ever growing pace, the number of people who use these technologies on a day to day basis is also increasing. This development has brought substantial benefits but also introduced novel threats and vulnerabilities related to leakage of confidential information, the theft of identities and the unauthorized modification of data.

Nowadays the environment is threatened by increasing levels of contaminants originating from human activities, endangering the health of organisms including humans. A wide range of biological indicators (biomarkers) has been developed to detect and assess exposure and effects of contaminants at sublethal levels. Biomarkers are now routinely used in biomonitoring programs. Cholinesterase (ChE) activity is a useful biomarker for assessing the effects of pollution and has been used mainly as a marker of exposure to organophosphate (OP) and carbamate (CB) insecticides. Nevertheless there is increasing evidence arising by recent studies that ChE activities are affected by a wide range of contaminants, especially in complex. This shows the need for further studies investigating the sensitivity of ChEs to pollutants other than OPs and CBs, with the final aim of investigating ChEs suitability as biomarkers for the assessment of a wider range of pollutants. Two distinct ChEs, AChE and BChE, both with several molecular variants are thought to occur in vertebrates, and can be distinguished on the basis of specific biochemical assays. In invertebrates, ChEs with characteristics intermediate between those of vertebrate AChE or BChE have been identified, but further studies are still needed to investigate their characteristics and sensitivity to chemical exposure.

The aim of this special issue is to foster state-of-the-art research in the area of ChEs applies to biochemistry and ecotoxicology. This special issue focuses on advances in knowledge of both ChEs sensitivity to different pollutants and assessment of characteristics in different species. It will mainly serve as a landmark source for future studies regarding ChEs applications in field studies of environmental pollution monitoring.
